Mark Carney. Call a Political Sovereignty Election.

Donald Trump is demanding that Canada make a long list of concessions in pursuit of a renewed trade deal by August 19 2026.  Or else he will impose 50 percent tariffs.  And if you appease him on this, he will up the ante again, and demand more concessions.  Or else.  And if you appease him this second time, he will demand yet another set of concessions.  Ad infinitum.  According to the Globe and Mail of Saturday August 8, 2026.

I make this appeal to my prime minister, Mark Carney.  I do not pretend to have all the information that you have in order to make decisions about tactics in bargaining.

My intuition is that you should intentionally fail to make the concessions before August 19th.  Call his bluff.  This is what will make the headlines, regardless of what might come soon afterward (or not).  You want the headline to be Mark Carney Refuses Appeasement and Seeks the Time to Get a Good Deal for Everyone.  You don't want the headline, or lead paragraph,  to have any mention of Neville Chamberlain in it.

Whatever you do, I urge you to Call a Political Sovereignty Election.

Make political sovereignty the issue in the US-Canada trade deal negotiations

On or about August 19, go on every media that you can in Canada to make a brief speech where you announce that you are calling a federal election, where the issue will be whether Canada should demand to keep its political sovereignty in any trade deal. 

You want and need a mandate from the Canadian people.  You are ready to be transactional about all sorts of things.  You might agree to a clause about the auto industry, that has the practical effect of discouraging Chinese sales of electric cars, and encourages buying of cars with 50 percent US content.  But you will not agree to any wording that restricts Canada's freedom to make any decisions that it chooses about trading with China or any other country.  You will not surrender Canada's political sovereignty.

Three reasons to call a federal election on Canada’s political sovereignty

Why should you call a political sovereignty election?

First, you cannot get better terms by ragging the puck until the midterms.  Not if you give away the store before then.  Not if you surrender Canada's political sovereignty before then, by signing up for Fortress America and the Golden Dome project. 

Trump can conduct the trade agreement negotiations as he chooses regardless of who controls Congress.  If anything, Trump could hurt himself, if he responds to your demanding political sovereignty as a requirement in any part of the trade document, by declaring (economic and political) war on Canada.

Second, in the worst case scenario, the US will impose the same set of concessions on Canada that it was always going to impose anyway.  Except that you refused appeasement in defence of a clear new red line.  Any trade deal must respect Canada's right to make its own decisions.  It must respect our political sovereignty.  And you are going to the people to ask them to say if they agree.  This is something that is very easy for all American citizens to understand, not just Canadians.  It is what they want for their own country.  The Declaration of Independence.

Yes, you risk losing the election. In order to save a country.

Third, yes you could lose the election.  It is not likely, because neither the NDP nor the Conservatives are ready for a federal election.  But it is possible.  This is part of what makes you credible.  You might win a majority similar to the one you have now.  Perhaps the most likely outcome is a minority government, with you still in charge. 

Whatever the outcome, you can count on all parties openly declaring that they join you in calling for Canada's political sovereignty to be respected in any trade deal.  They will call on voters to vote for them on other issues.

What is the worst that can happen from your point of view?   A Pierre Polievre government (most likely a minority one) that you strongly support in its negotiation of the trade deal.  That minority government will not last forever.  And if Polievre is stupid enough to sell out Canada's political sovereignty in the negotiations, he will last for a lot shorter time.

Mark Carney, please call a political sovereignty election.  And let Canada win big, no matter what practical concessions get imposed on us.
